Many people wondered if this would be a chance for the US and North Korea to put their differences aside and shake hands in a show of diplomacy. Seated very closely to Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Pence refused to acknowledge her or shake her hand. When asked by reporters why Pence would not shake her hand, he simply explained, “She’s not my wife.” Even though Pence’s wife was present, he still refused to shake hands with Kim Yo Jong because he was afraid he might “catch lady cooties” or worse yet, make her pregnant.
